Artist Profile

Tim Ebner

b. 1953

Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1953, Tim Ebner now lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his B.F.A. in 1979 and M.F.A. in 1982, both from the California Institute of the Arts. He is from of a generation of artists who came to fruition in the 1980s and who had a fascination with the politics of aesthetics.

Ebner’s works are often surrogates for embodying conflicting ideas on abstraction. They explore the commercialization of abstraction and also pay homage to the Finish Fetish artists, such as John McCracken’s own resin-coated “planks.” In fact, this movement from the 1960s was one of the first identified as having risen out of Southern California, due in part to the use of new resins in both the aerospace and surfboard industries.
