Francis de Erdely

That artist, Francis de Erdely, was himself no stranger to unrest and tragedy. De Erdely lived and studied art in Western Europe until the 1930s when, as so many artists did, he fled the rise of fascism and war for America. In this country, de Erdely exhibited widely and became an effective teacher of academic painting and drawing. His academicism was always, however, drenched in the awareness of and sensitivity to the fragility of the human condition. His art probed the uncomfortable realms of suffering in often harsh, angular, and turgidly drawn compositions.
